Depressed? Ask Your Doctor Why MAOIs May Be Right for You

According to thousands of patient drug reviews, the more people like an antidepressant or antipsychotic, the less likely it is prescribed. Even odder, the older the drug is, the better reviews of it tend to be.

Is this because older drugs are off-patent, and thus drug companies have no incentive to push them on doctors? Is it because doctors are more likely to prescribe newer treatments they studied in medical school? Is it because newer drugs trade efficacy for less difficult side effects?

While more research is needed, one conclusion you might tentatively draw is that if you suffer from, say, atypical depression, and feel like SSRIs or TCAs aren’t giving you the help you need, ask your doctor if MAOIs–monoamine oxidase inhibitors–may be right for you.
